Project Overview
Armadillo Engineering was commissioned by a Formula 1 team, a long-standing customer of ours, to manufacture a set of high-precision fluid connectors for use within the car's systems. These components needed to perform flawlessly under the extreme demands of a motorsport application.
Machined from titanium and stainless steel, these connectors sit at the intersection of precision engineering and reliability: every fitting had to seal perfectly, first time, with no margin for leakage.
The Challenge
Each connector featured complex geometry: threaded connections joining the part to the wider fluid system, machined across multiple different centrelines to accommodate intricate compound angles. That complexity ruled out standard 5-axis machining.
Instead, every component had to be radially turned, a slower and more specialist process, but the only way to achieve the true, continuous roundness the customer's specification demanded, at angles most fabricators wouldn't take on.
Holding this together were 20-micron tolerances across every fitting, essential to guarantee a leak-free seal on each fluid connection.
Careful set-up was required throughout to keep threads, sealing faces, and internal passages perfectly aligned, and to do it repeatably, across every part, within Formula 1's fast-paced delivery timelines.
Scope of Work
Armadillo delivered the full manufacturing and verification process in-house:
- Precision CNC turning and milling of titanium and stainless steel components
- Radial turning at complex compound angles across multiple centrelines
- Threading and machining of critical sealing faces
- Internal flow-path verification using cast compound moulding and shadowgraph inspection
- Continuous dimensional inspection across five separate stages of manufacture
- Final assembly and quality sign-off against Formula 1 specification
Materials & Delivery
Components were manufactured from titanium and stainless steel to tolerances of 20 microns across all fittings.
Every part was produced and inspected in-house, and the full set was delivered on time and fully compliant with specification.
The Outcome
The finished parts met every dimensional and quality requirement, with each connector performing exactly as intended under demanding motorsport conditions.
The project demonstrated Armadillo's ability to manufacture and inspect complex, high-tolerance precision components for elite motorsport applications, combining specialist radial turning capability with rigorous, repeatable quality control.
We have completed many jobs for Formula 1, and we understand the standards and expertise the sport demands a level of precision and reliability we bring to every project we take on.
Whatever the challenge, we'll find a way to build it. Tell us about your project.
